Winch line care after a muddy recovery weekend

We pulled a Tacoma out of clay twice on Saturday. The line looked fine on the drum, but the next morning it was stiff with grit. I paid more attention to the fairlead and the first ten feet than I used to.

Rinse it with clean water, let it dry completely, and inspect strand by strand near the hook and fairlead. Avoid solvents and aggressive pressure directly against the fibers. If you can feel a hard section that will not loosen, retire that section rather than hiding it.

A mesh bag made drying much easier. I laid the line out in the shade, rinsed from the hook toward the drum, and rotated it every few hours. The line looked darker after drying but the fibers were flexible again.

Do you remove the line from the drum every time? I usually have enough room at home to pull it out, but not when we are camping.

Not every time. For routine mud, rinse what you can and do a close inspection when you get home. If the line has been submerged in silt or salt water, a complete unwind is worth the extra time. The hidden layers are where contamination can stay.

That matches what I found. The outside looked clean after a quick rinse, but the inside layers still had fine grit. The full unwind took twenty minutes and probably saved a much more expensive surprise later.
